About

Hi! I’m Sam.

Hi, I’m Sam! I’m the recipe developer and food photographer behind The Culinary Compass. Since starting the site in 2016, I’ve been creating approachable, flavor-forward recipes that help home cooks get creative in the kitchen.

I have a degree in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech with a minor in Food Science and Technology, plus a Recipe Writing Certification from Le Cordon Bleu. That background makes me naturally curious about the why behind a recipe, but mostly? I just really, really like good food.

I’m the kind of person who plans a dinner party around a sauce idea and thinks of spice jars like little travel souvenirs.

Sam, the founder of The Culinary Compass has long brown hair, wearing a maroon shirt and gold hoop earrings, sits smiling at a table in a cozy café with round lights and windows in the background.

What You’ll Find on The Culinary Compass

The Culinary Compass is all about helping home cooks feel confident getting more creative with flavor, especially when there are people to feed.

You’ll find:

  • Dips and appetizers that are made for sharing and have a habit of disappearing quickly.
  • Sauces, condiments, and spice blends that can completely change an otherwise simple meal.
  • Chicken and seafood dinners that feel special enough for company without being intimidating to make.
  • Cocktails and mocktails for everything from summer cookouts to holiday parties.
  • Kitchen guides and resources that help you understand ingredients, seasonings, and techniques so you can cook with more confidence.

This site is for anyone who has stared at their spice drawer and thought, I should really use this more. It’s for the friend who always brings the good dip, the weeknight host, and anyone who wants food to have plenty of flavor without requiring restaurant-level effort.

How I Develop My Recipes

Every recipe published on The Culinary Compass is developed with the home cook in mind.

I create and test recipes in my own kitchen, paying attention not only to whether something tastes good, but also to whether the ingredient amounts, timing, temperatures, textures, and instructions make sense when you’re actually standing at the stove.

My background in engineering and food science has made me especially interested in understanding why something works. That might mean figuring out how an ingredient affects texture, why one cooking method works better than another, or how acidity, salt, sweetness, heat, and fat can be balanced to make a dish taste better.

I also photograph my recipes myself, so the food you see here is the food I actually made and tested.

My goal isn’t to make recipes complicated for the sake of being impressive. It’s to give you clear instructions, useful tips, and enough context to understand what you’re doing so you can confidently make the recipe in your own kitchen.

My Experience & Background

Food wasn’t actually my original career plan. I went to Virginia Tech to study Industrial Engineering, once dreaming of designing roller coasters, but halfway through college, I realized I wanted to work with food instead. I added a Food Science and Technology minor the next week and stayed an extra year to finish it.

Around the same time, I was working in Virginia Tech’s study abroad office, hearing stories about the places people visited and, more importantly, what they ate. I couldn’t afford to travel everywhere on my growing bucket list, but I could explore different ingredients and cuisines through food.

A few years later, The Culinary Compass was born during a 3 a.m. shift at a production facility, watching soda bottles fly by and thinking, this isn’t it. I wanted to create food, understand it, photograph it, and share it.

So in 2016, I started The Culinary Compass.

How I Develop My Recipes

I’ve spent more than a decade working with food, recipes, and photography, both through The Culinary Compass and professionally creating recipe and food photography content for other publishers and brands.

My background includes:

  • B.S. in Industrial Engineering, Virginia Tech
  • Minor in Food Science and Technology, Virginia Tech
  • Recipe developer and creator of The Culinary Compass since 2016
  • 10+ years of food photography and recipe development experience
  • Professional recipe development and food photography for food publishers and brands

My work and recipes have also been featured by publications including Southern Living, Taste of Home, BuzzFeed, and more.

A Little More About Me

When I’m not testing recipes or styling food behind the camera, I’m usually experimenting with a new photography idea, finding another sauce I suddenly need to make, or planning what I want to eat next.

I’m also usually hanging out with Tucker, my dog and unofficial kitchen supervisor. He takes his role very seriously, especially when there’s chicken involved, and is always nearby just in case something happens to fall on the floor.

I believe good food doesn’t need to be fussy, and entertaining doesn’t need to mean creating a picture-perfect dinner party. Sometimes it’s a full table of friends. Sometimes it’s drinks and a really good dip.

Either way, there should probably be something worth going back for seconds.

Thanks for being here. I hope The Culinary Compass helps you find something new to make, a flavor you haven’t tried before, or just a very good excuse to invite people over.
